Ravello's Historic Sanctuaries: Villa Rufolo & Villa Cimbrone

Spectacular stone arches and lush exotic garden overlooking the sea in Villa Rufolo Ravello

The Hilltop Crown of the Amalfi Coast

Resting serenely at 350 meters altitude atop the Dragon's Valley, the town of Ravello has offered refuge to poets, composers, and statesmen for centuries. Unlike its sea-level neighbors, Ravello exudes an aristocratic, contemplative tranquility. Its two celebrated villa estates—Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone—represent the pinnacle of Arab-Norman-Siculo architecture intertwined with English romantic landscape gardening.

Villa Rufolo: The Inspiration for Wagner's Parsifal

Constructed in the 13th century by the wealthy Rufolo merchant dynasty, this estate represents a crossroads of Mediterranean aesthetics. Entering through the massive Torre d'Ingresso, visitors discover a two-level cloister rich with pointed Moorish arches and intricate terracotta friezes.

In May 1880, composer Richard Wagner walked these cascading garden terraces and was so overwhelmed by their beauty that he exclaimed, "The magical garden of Klingsor is found!" Today, Villa Rufolo serves as the central venue for the prestigious annual Ravello Festival, where world-renowned symphony orchestras perform on a wooden stage built directly over the precipice above the Gulf of Salerno.

Visiting Information for Villa Rufolo

Villa Cimbrone & The Terrace of Infinity (Terrazza dell'Infinito)

Walking ten minutes south along the pedestrian cobblestone path from the Piazza Vescovado brings you to Villa Cimbrone. Reimagined in the early 20th century by British aristocrat Lord Grimthorpe with the assistance of local master builder Nicola Mansi, Cimbrone's gardens are an enchanting labyrinth of avenues, temples, and classical pavilions.

The garden culminates at the world-famous Terrazza dell'Infinito (Terrace of Infinity). Lined with eighteenth-century marble portrait busts, this limestone balcony offers a dizzying, boundless vista where the crystalline azure sea merges seamlessly with the southern sky without visual boundary.

Botanical Highlights of Cimbrone:

The Avenue of Immensity, shaded by century-old wisteria in April, leads past the Temple of Bacchus, the Cloister with its rare English roses, and the sculpted statue of David resting within a sunken stone grotto.
